How SST works

Our online, self-paced courses consist of nine short modules, each lasting 10 to 30 minutes. Each module is divided into a virtual classroom component, a virtual simulation center and learning assessments in a virtual sedation suite/exam area. Learners can progress at their own pace, with no time pressure to complete modules. Our system is designed to guide your leaning journey effectively and ensure you are up to date with with the latest standards and guidelines.

Learners access the knowledge assessment in each module and receive a review of relevant content based on results. SSTmoderate is pre-requisite

Providers who are interested in Deep Sedation practice may consider taking SSTdeep, our deep sedation course. SSTdeep provides an additional 4 modules of content, where SSTmoderate is a prerequisite. SSTdeep should be considered as a primer to deep sedation training and should be complemented by an extensive in-person education at your facility or a training center.

The Safe Sedation Training program has been an integral part of our residents training for several years. The on-line modules prepare the residents for the simulation course and eventual live patient experiences. The staff and Instructors are very professional in their presentations and explanations. Hands on training is the key to learning proper sedation techniques. One of our former residents sent me this text after an experience he encountered in his private office:

“...had another doctor's patient lose consciousness and was apneic in another room. She wasn't breather for several minutes. I was able to bag mask her and she came back! Feeling really grateful for my training during residency....”

The didactic, clinical and hands on experience will teach you skills that you will use throughout your career and in every-day life. The Safe Sedation program is a must have experience for every dental provider using all types of sedation in their offices.

The SST was suggested through an Endoscopy group originally and I thought it was a good idea to subscribe all the staff to do the SST moderate and then continue with the two yearly refreshers as there was no recognised programme in New Zealand.

I think the content is great and the ability to repeat modules and questions is beneficial. It certainly refreshes knowledge and gives all the staff a framework to work within. All online education in New Zealand has hours allocated on the certificate if this is something that could be done.

From inpatient to emergency room to procedural areas, SST serves our need to standardize the moderate sedation training all our staff are getting. Regardless of our training and background we can come together to provide a safe and consistent experience for our patients.

The airway management section was excellent and trained or updated the team on this vital skill to the delivery of safe sedation.
